Papanasam, Kamal Haasan’s recently-released film, has collected in its first three days in theatres half of what Drishyam (the Malayalam film which was remade in Tamil as Papanasam) managed to collect at the box-office during its entire run.

Mohanlal and Meena essayed the lead roles in the Malayalam version directed by Jeethu Joseph who also debuted as director in Tamil with Papanasam. Drishyam has been remade in Telugu and Kannada while its Hindi version featuring Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran and Tabu in lead roles is slated to release in theatres on 31st July.

A good script aided by Kamal’s acting has made Papanasam a super-duper hit, trade pundits point out. In fact, some critics are of the view that Kamal Haasan’s performance was better than that of Mohanlal and as a whole, Papanasam scored more than its original version Drishyam.

Papanasam has collected Rs.25 crores (half of what Drishyam collected in its entire run of 150 days) just in its first three days. Drishyam could touch the Rs.25 crore mark only after it crossed 50 days in theatres. Papanasam has collected Rs.1.72 crores in the U.S. and might end up collecting Rs.100 crores worldwide, thereby becoming the first Kamal-starrer to enter the Rs.100-crore club!
